Lip balm is a necessity during the winter, and should be applied regularly throughout the day. Look for a lip balm that contains beeswax or petroleum jelly, as these ingredients will help to seal in moisture. Avoid lip balms that contain alcohol, as this can dry out the lips. Apply lip balm before bedtime to give your lips an overnight treatment, and in the morning before applying lipstick or lip gloss.
Drinking plenty of water is important for keeping the lips hydrated from the inside out. The body is made up of around 60% water, and so it is essential to keep topped up in order to maintain healthy skin and lips. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, and more if you can. You can also increase your water intake by eating foods that are high in water content such as fruits and vegetables.
Protect your lips from the cold weather by covering up when you go outside. Wear a scarf or wrap a scarf around your mouth and nose to protect your lips from the cold wind. If you are going to be spending time outdoors in the cold, make sure you apply a generous layer of lip balm beforehand to protect your lips from chapping.
Avoid licking your lips as this can actually make them drier. When you lick your lips, the saliva evaporates quickly leaving behind dryness and flakiness. If you suffer from dryness, try using a humidifier in your home or office to add moisture back into the air and help keep your lips hydrated.
