This article will be your ultimate guide on how to wear red lipstick so that you feel bold, confident, and empowered.
Before we begin with our tutorial on how to wear red lipstick, here are a bunch of things to keep in mind to rock the perfect red pout.
1. Find your texture
Finding the perfect red that suits you can be a both a bit of a challenge and fun as you overcome your first hurdle. You will be surprised as to how the color red is split into various tones, for instance, true red, blue tone, and orange tone etc..
Experiment with different shades to find your signature red. Know what type of lipstick you are comfortable with – liquid or crayon. They are available in different textures from glossy, matte, to sheer. As your lipstick texture plays a vital role in elevating your look, you do not want your lips to look too hooker tacky or overwhelming the gloss.
Moreover, matte lips go along with any outfit. So, before picking the right shade, select the type of lipstick you can carry off with confidence.
Having said that, we asked Sabrina Claudio What she learned about beauty this year? She replied, “I think I’ve learned that less is definitely more when it comes to makeup. I used to pile on the foundation and concealer, but now I prefer to let my skin breathe a little bit. I also discovered the power of setting spray—it really does help your makeup last all day.”
2. Choose the right shade of red
Now that you’re quite conversant with the textures and tones its time to jump shades of red as you find the shades that perfectly complement your skin tone. Don’t just chose one but use this as a rough guide .
Light skin tone:
You can pick blue-based cool undertones like burgundy or berry. If you are looking for shade on the warmer side, you can try fiery, red-orange hues. Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick – Siren in Scarlet or Craving Coral are shades that can complement your skin tone. It will add a vivid pop to your lips while enhancing your natural glow.
Medium or dusky skin tone:
Slightly darker shades with blue- or pink-based undertones will perfectly highlight your distinctive look. If you prefer warmer tones, then go for shades like oxblood or rich undertones of orange, gold, or apricot. Stand out and steal the spotlight with shades like Settle for More from the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Crayon Lipstick range.
Dark skin tone:
The trick to ace darker shades is to avoid white-base red matte lipsticks that can make lips look chalky. So, go for purple, wine, or chocolate brown-red shades like Voyager from the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick range. Warmer, brick-toned shades with a touch of orange-red also work well with this complexion.
Avoid being unsure and explore different shades of red virtually before picking your shade with the Maybelline Virtual Try On tool. The Virtual Try On tool let’s you experiment with different red lipstick shades in real time with no commitment, just what you need when you have so many different shades to choose from.
We then asked Sabrina Claudio if she had any New Year’s beauty resolutions? to which she retorted, “I definitely want to experiment more with my hair and try new styles. I also want to focus on taking care of my skin—I want to start using face oils and maybe even get into some light facial massage.”
3. Prepare your lips
Before you begin, exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub or an old toothbrush for a smooth and flawless application. This also helps to prolong the longevity of your lipstick. Don’t forget to apply a nourishing lip balm or a primer to moisturize your lips before you set out to apply your lipstick.
If you want to prevent your glossy lipstick from bleeding or feathering, use a lip pencil to line your lips before application.
If you are a beginner, we recommend a shade like “Russian Red” by M.A.C. It’s right in the middle of warm and cool tones, making it the perfect red lipstick for every skin tone.
Dry and chapped lips are a big no-no! The key to getting soft, flawless lips is to exfoliate. This step hydrates and helps your lips to plump up. Use a good lip scrub to get rid of the flaky skin and then apply a good lip balm to moisturize your lips. It is technically the first step that prepares your lips for a smooth application.
4. Make a base and line your lips
Apply small amounts of lightweight foundation or concealer over your lips to fill in the cracks. This step helps your red liquid lipstick to last longer. Lining your lips is the next step, which most of us tend to skip. But, lip liners help create a neat outline to prevent your lipstick from smudging out of the natural lip line.
Choose a lip liner that matches with your red liquid lipstick. Outline and define your lips with the Maybelline Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner and fill them to create a second layer of the base for long-lasting lipstick. You can also use the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Crayon lipstick as a liner, thanks to its sharp tip that helps with precise application.
5. Apply the lipstick and blot
Choose the desired red matte lipstick, whether liquid or crayon depending on the need. If you’re going to be out for a longer duration, then a red shade from the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick collection would work best. It gives a flawless finish that lasts up to 16 hours.
Once you apply the first coat, blot the excess lipstick with a tissue paper. Apply the second coat and blot again. Now, lightly dab some translucent powder on your lips to set the lipstick. Balance the rest of your makeup depending on the tone of your red.
Lipstick is a significant part of makeup that brings the whole look together. So, keep your makeup minimal and let your red lips do the pouting!
I love this style – simple but effective.
Still I struggling keeping it on….some day I might actually get it on as quick as you.
Merry Christmas Shantae . Thanks for all the inspiration for next year.
