But now people are really starting to think about it as something that can enhance their wellbeing and create a certain ambience in their home.”

This shift is being driven in part by the popularity of essential oils, which are often used in aromatherapy. “People are becoming more aware of the benefits of using natural ingredients and essential oils in particular,” says jasmine Hemsley, co-founder of Hemsley + Hemsley, a UK-based wellness brand. “They’re realizing that they can create a luxurious experience at home without having to spend a lot of money.”

The trend is also being fueled by the rise of “wellness tourism,” as more people seek out experiences that offer a sense of relaxation and mindfulness. “There’s a growing trend for people to want to bring the spa experience home with them,” says Hemsley. “Creating a luxurious, relaxing environment in your own home is the ultimate way to unwind after a long day.”

So what does this trend mean for the future of home fragrance? We asked some experts to weigh in:

There will be more products on the market: As the demand for home fragrance products grows, we can expect to see an influx of new products hitting the market. “We’re going to see more and more brands launching home fragrance lines,” says Hemsley. “And we’ll also see existing brands expanding their ranges to include home fragrance products.”

We’ll see more niche products: As the market becomes more saturated, we can expect to see brands differentiate themselves by launching more niche products. “We’re already seeing brands launch products that are aimed at specific needs or moments, such as sleep or relaxation,” says Hemsley. “I think we’ll see even more of this in the future, as brands look to cater to specific needs and moments.”

There will be more “wellness-focused” products: As the trend for home fragrance continues to grow, we can expect to see more products that focus on wellness benefits. “I think we’ll see more brands launch products that are designed to help people relax and de-stress,” says Hemsley. “We’ll also see more products that are designed to boost energy levels or improve mood.”

We’ll see more “sustainable” products: As consumers become more conscious of the impact their purchases have on the environment, we can expect to see more brands launch sustainable home fragrance products. “We’re already seeing a move towards more sustainable packaging and ingredients, and I think this will continue in the home fragrance market,” says Hemsley.
