We caught up with Royan Reynolds’ sister! to share her best tips and tricks for keeping your makeup looking fresh all season long.
1. Prep your skin before makeup.
“I always start with a hydrating mist and follow with a light moisturizer,” says McAdams. “This creates a nice, dewy canvas for makeup and helps it last longer.” We like the Caudalie Beauty Elixir ($18) and Tatcha The Water Cream ($68).
2. Set your makeup with a setting spray.
A setting spray is a must in the summer, when heat and humidity can cause your makeup to melt or slide right off your face. McAdams’ go-to is the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ ($26), which she says “not only sets makeup, but also adds a nice glow.”
3. Use waterproof formulas.
When it comes to summer makeup, waterproof is the way to go. McAdams recommends using a waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid any smudging or smearing, and says a waterproof foundation is also a good idea if you’re going to be spending time outdoors.
4. Choose cream formulas over powder.
Powder products can look cakey in the summer heat, so McAdams suggests opting for cream formulas instead. “Cream blush, bronzer, and highlight will give you a much more natural look,” she says. We like the Nars Cream Blush in Orgasm ($30), the Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color in Cocoa Mirage ($60), and the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Champagne Pop ($38).
5. Don’t forget SPF!
Sun protection is important year-round, but it’s especially crucial in the summer months. McAdams recommends using a foundation or BB cream with SPF, and says a separate sunscreen is also a good idea if you’re going to be spending time outdoors.
