French Makeup Tips From a Beauty Insider

Sincerest form of flattery, right?
Here are a few tips I picked up from a recent sojourn to the City of Light that will give you a little taste of that Gallic flair:
Start with a clean slate
The first step in any good makeup routine is to start with a clean face. That means using a gentle cleanser to remove all traces of dirt, oil and makeup before beginning your routine. I like to use Bioderma Sensibio H2O, a popular French micellar water that’s gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin.

Use a primer
After cleansing, it’s important to use a primer before applying foundation. This will help to create a smooth canvas and give your makeup something to adhere to. I like to use the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer, which contains a touch of shimmer to give your skin a healthy glow.

Choose the right foundation
When it comes to foundation, the French prefer a more natural look. That means choosing a foundation that provides medium coverage and a dewy finish. I like to use the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation, which is perfect for creating that natural, “no-makeup” makeup look.

Conceal where necessary
After you’ve applied your foundation, use a concealer to cover up any blemishes or under-eye circles. The French tend to go for concealers with a lighter consistency, like the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat.

Set your makeup with powder
To set your makeup and prevent it from slipping or creasing, dust on a translucent powder. I like to use the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. This will help to keep your makeup in place all day long.

Fill in your brows
Filling in your eyebrows is an important step in any makeup routine, but it’s especially important if you want to achieve that “French girl” look. Use a brow pencil or powder to fill in any sparse areas, and then use a clear brow gel to set them in place. I like to use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel.

Create a nude lip
The French tend to go for a more subdued lip color, so skip the bright reds and pinks in favor of nudes and peachy shades. I like to use the MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in “ Velvet Teddy”. This shade is the perfect mix of nude and peach, and it gives your lips a bit of color without being too over the top.

Add a touch of color to your cheeks
To add a touch of color to your cheeks, use a blush or bronzer with a slight sheen. This will give you a healthy, natural-looking glow. I like to use the NARS Blush in “Orgasm”. This shade is perfect for adding a touch of color to your cheeks without looking too overdone.

Finish with a setting spray
To keep your makeup looking fresh all day long, finish your routine with a setting spray. This will help to keep your makeup in place, and it will also help to control any shine. I like to use the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. This spray is great for keeping your makeup in place, and it also has a pleasant scent.
