Black Female Founders in Beauty on Creating Challenge and Opportunity

In her role as CEO of Sundial Brands, a company she co-founded with her husband, Ric Sabin, Cara oversees the creative and strategic direction for the company’s portfolio of brands, including SheaMoisture, Aubrey Organics, and Nubian Heritage. Cara is also one of the founding members of the Black Female Founders in Beauty (BF3) Network. BF3 is an online community that helps women of color start and grow their beauty-related businesses.

Women of color have been at the center of one of the most profitable industries in the world for generations yet have not had access to meaningful funding or mentoring to help them grow their businesses.

That is why Cara and her co-founders created BF3 more than five years ago as a way to remedy this gap—to create a community where these women could connect and collaborate, where they could learn from each other’s successes and challenges and grow their businesses together.

Cara has since seen BF3 grow to include more than 1,000 members in 15 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as in Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. She is passionate about building a supportive global network for women of color who are starting their own beauty businesses.

“The key takeaway I want women to get from BF3 is that they are not alone,” she says. “There are literally thousands of others just like them who are trying to figure out how to build a successful business.”
