Diane von Furstenberg was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1946. Her father was a wealthy businessman and her mother was a socialite. Diane von Furstenberg was educated at the prestigious Lausanne boarding school in Switzerland. After graduation, she moved to Paris to study art.

In Paris, Diane von Furstenberg met Prince Egon of Furstenberg. The two married in 1969 and had two children together: Alexander and Tatiana. The couple divorced in 1972, but Diane kept the prince’s surname.

In 1974, Diane von Furstenberg debuted her first collection of women’s clothing. The collection was an instant success and the wrap dress became an iconic fashion item. In 1976, she launched her own line of cosmetics and fragrances.
